What is Alpha?
The Alpha Course is a wonderful opportunity to be introduced to the Christian faith. It is designed for normal people—structured, yet relaxed and unconventional. Alpha is open for anyone to take part.
Each meeting begins with a meal. It’s easy to start conversations and get to know people in this setting. You can listen, discuss, discover new ideas. And ask what ever you want! No question is too dumb or too difficult. Alpha is interdenominational and is supported by all of the major Christian churches and organisations in over 135 countries.
The input times cover a variety of topics, addressing the foundational questions and themes of the Christian faith. The course is oriented around basic beliefs which all Christians have in common and runs over a 10-week period.
Alpha was founded at Holy Trinity Brompton in London and was held for the first time over twenty years ago. Since then the course has been translated into several languages and has taken place thousands of times throughout the world.
Who is it for?
Alpha is for everyone, and especially for:
- People who want to find out more about God and faith in a relaxed and informal environment
- People who are critical of the church but interested in faith
- People who are new to the church or who want to refresh their understanding of the basics of Christianity
- People who believe that there must be something more in life
How the course works
The Alpha Course is made up of a series of short talks on various themes such as, “Who is Jesus?”, “Can I be sure of my faith?” and “Why and how should I read the Bible?” After each talk there is opportunity for discussion, where everyone is welcome to contribute their opinion, ask questions, and discuss with the rest of the group. An important part of the Alpha Course is the all-day Saturday session about the Holy Spirit.
How much does it cost?
There is no charge for attending the Alpha course, although you may contribute towards the food.
